Set up Codex

Dipstick reads your own codex executable, started as codex app-server --stdio. That means the prerequisite is not an API key — it is that the tool itself is installed and already authenticated on this Mac.

Prerequisites

macOS 13 Ventura or newer, on Apple silicon or Intel.
The ChatGPT desktop app, or an authenticated Codex CLI you can run as codex from a terminal.

02 / 03 · Steps

Four steps to a live meter.

Step 1: Enable Codex on the first-launch provider screen.
Step 2: Setup opens Settings and lists the rate-limit windows your account currently reports.
Step 3: Place the five-hour limit in the menu bar and keep the weekly one in the popover, or the other way round — each limit has independent Popover and Bar choices.
Step 4: Choose Finish once the checks settle.

Fast local checks identify which services are available before any authenticated tool, credential, subprocess or network request is used, so an unconfigured provider costs nothing.

03 / 03 · When it fails

Honest failure modes.

These are the ones you will actually hit, and what each one means.

Codex says Not Installed.

Install the ChatGPT desktop app or the Codex CLI, authenticate it, then choose Refresh.

Codex says Sign-In Required.

Choose Sign In on the Codex card; Dipstick opens the supported local login flow in Terminal. Refresh when it finishes.

A per-model limit never appears.

Only validated per-model limits the account actually reports are shown. Newly discovered provider-specific limits stay opt-in.

Still stuck: known issues lists the constraints that are not bugs, and [email protected] reaches a person.
